Oct. 1 marks the 75th year of publication for Minnesota Conservation Volunteer, bimonthly magazine of the Department of Natural Resources. Since October 1940, the magazine has engaged readers with true stories of Minnesota’s woods, waters, prairies and wildlife.

As part of the magazine’s yearlong celebration, Gov. Mark Dayton has proclaimed October Minnesota Conservation Volunteer month. According to the governor’s proclamation, the magazine “has a 75-year tradition of telling stories that connect Minnesotans to the outdoors.”

“Every Minnesotan should know about Minnesota Conservation Volunteer because it’s a great way to discover the best of our state’s wild wonders,” says Kathleen Weflen, editor in chief since 1989. “And every reader is a potential advocate for wild and natural places.”

Readers support the magazine with voluntary contributions. Since 2003, their contributions have covered everything from paper and printing to staff salaries and benefits. It is the only state conservation magazine to claim the distinction of being financially supported by contributions from readers.

Minnesota Conservation Volunteer is a trusted source of outdoor information and ideas in homes and schools statewide. With more than 115,000 subscribers and an estimated readership of nearly a half million Minnesotans, the magazine is one of the most widely read publications in the state.

In the Sept.–Oct. anniversary issue, readers will find stories about the wanderings of cougars in Minnesota, a first-time deer hunter’s experience, and the shifting fortunes of the state’s moose population. A feature for Young Naturalists explores the mystery of bird migration. Long known for outstanding nature photography, the magazine also presents a photographic fall tour of Smoky Hills State Forest.
